Bands and singers in a hall that goes dark when the music starts, a short walk from the National Theatre.
Have a beer tapped from a golden saxophone at the Saxophone Bar, then take your seat in the dark hall.
The club in four facts
Why a club, not a hall

The club says it opened in 1957 and calls itself the oldest continuously operated jazz and theatre club in the world. Wikipedia describes it as the oldest jazz club in Prague. However you count, the programme has been jazz for close to seven decades, from swing and Dixieland to modern jazz, big band, blues, funk and bossa nova.
Wikipedia notes that the club promoted jazz from the 1950s, when the Communist regime condemned the genre. The ensemble Studio 5, with Karel Velebný and Luděk Hulan, premiered here on 2 June 1958.
The club's own site names Václav Havel and Bill Clinton among its past VIP-seat guests. On 11 January 1994 Havel brought Clinton here, gave him a saxophone and heard him sit in on Summertime and My Funny Valentine.
The programme page lists a new act on most evenings: quartets and singers, tribute nights, the occasional big band. Guests describe everything from a swing quartet to a night of Ella Fitzgerald songs, so the sound depends on the date you pick.
From cloakroom to last chorus
From the cloakroom to the last chorus, in the order a night at the club tends to unfold.
House rules keep coats, jackets and bags out of the hall. The cloakroom is free, so hand yours over and carry only a phone and a card to your seat.
A bar separate from the hall pours beer from a golden saxophone. It also sells wine, including a house cuvée, sweet aperitifs and a signature cocktail, and snacks.
With a standard ticket the club's manager assigns your seat. VIP ticket holders sit in the best seats in the club and start the night with a welcome drink.
Once the performance begins the hall settles into an intimate darkness. Phones go away, conversation stops and the band takes the room.
Swing, Dixieland, modern jazz, blues, bossa nova or a tribute night, depending on the date. A concert runs about two hours on most evenings.
Národní třída is the nearest metro and tram stop, and the National Theatre at the river end of the street is a short walk away.
The band changes from night to night, so treat this as a map of the room and not a running order.
